Open call : Application guideline for Invitational Fellowships for Research in Japan

○Invitational Fellowships for Research in Japan
This program is designed to enable Japanese researchers to invite their overseas colleagues to Japan to participate in cooperative work and other academic activities. Researchers of all countries having diplomatic relations with Japan are eligible. Applications are submitted by the inviting researchers who wish to host overseas researchers in Japan.

1. Fields of Research
All fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences are included under this program.

2. Host Research Institutions
The applicant (host researcher) must be a researcher who is employed full-time or classified as being employed full-time at a university or research institution as specified in Article 2 of the Procedure for the Handling of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (Kakenhi), issued by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

3.Program overview
The “JSPS International Fellowships for Research in Japan (Invitational Fellowship)” has been carried out to invite overseas researchers to promote the international academic exchange.
The program consists of three options of long-term, short-term, and short-term S. Grantees are selected by going through the selection process following the submission of applications by a host researcher in Japan who wishes to invite a researcher from overseas via the head of his/her university or institution. The recruitment and selection for the long-term program is announced and conducted once a year, and twice a year for the short-term and short-term S programs.
The outline of the program is as follows.

<Long-term: Mid-career to Professor Level>
This program allows researchers employed at designated Japanese research institutions to invite fellow researchers from other countries to Japan to participate in cooperative activities at their research institutions.
(1) Duration : 2 to 10 months
(2) Eligibility
•Be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan (JSPS treats Taiwanese and Palestinian researchers in this manner).
•As a rule, researchers who hold a full-time position in an overseas research institution.
•Researchers in a position equivalent to a university professor, associate professor or assistant professor in Japan. Other researchers who received their doctorate degree prior to 6 years or more and are continuing to do research in a university or non-profit research institution may be eligible.

<Short-term: Professor, Associate Professor>
This program allows researchers employed at designated Japanese research institutions to invite fellow researchers from other countries to Japan for short periods of time to participate in discussions, attend seminars, give lectures, or conduct similar activities at their institutions.
(1) Duration : 14 to 60 days
(2) Eligibility
•Be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan (JSPS treats Taiwanese and Palestinian researchers in this manner).
•As a rule, researchers who hold a full-time position in an overseas research institution.
•Researchers in a position equivalent to a university professor or associate professor in Japan.

<Short-term S: Nobel Prize Level>
Under this program, overseas researchers who have eminent records of research achievements and awards on a Nobel Prize level and who are actively leaders in their fields are invited to Japan to give lectures, guide research, and conduct other activities.
(1) Duration : 7 to 30 days
(2) Eligibility
•Be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan (JSPS treats Taiwanese and Palestinian researchers in this manner).
•Researchers who are Nobel laureates or recipients of similarly high-level international prizes with exceptionally outstanding records of research achievements and who currently occupy a leading position in their subject field.
