JSPS Alumni Association of Indonesia (JAAI) organized the VIRTUAL KICK-OFF SEMINAR “Integrated Actions of Peatland and Mangrove Restoration and Sustainable Development through Bio-village Concept”

On July 28, 2021, JSPS Alumni Association of Indonesia (JAAI) held the VIRTUAL KICK-OFF SEMINAR “Integrated Actions of Peatland and Mangrove Restoration and Sustainable Development through Bio-village Concept” with support by Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Platform (JASTIP). JSPS Bangkok Office attended the ceremony as a guest.

The seminar was opened with the greeting by Ms. Citra Helen Purba, Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency, Republic of Indonesia. After the greeting, Prof. Kono Yasuyuki, Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), Kyoto University delivered opening remarks.

After the remarks, Ms. Makiko Yashiro, Keynote Speaker, Programme Officer, Ecosystem Division, UNEP Regional Office for Asian and the Pacific presented on the topic “The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the importance of peatlands in Southeast Asia”.

Following the presentations, Prof. Wahyu Dwianto, Research Center for Biomaterials, Indonesian Institute of Sciences presented on the topic “Introduction of Integrated Actions of Peatland and Mangrove Restoration and Sustainable Development through Bio-village Concept”

After the presentation from Prof. Wahyu Dwianto, the topic was divided into 3 sessions, Environment and Related Sciences, Food and Health Sciences, and New and Renewable Energy Sciences.

For Environment and Related Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Osamu Kozan, CSEAS, Kyoto University, Prof. Hadi Susilo Arifin, Natural Resources and Environmental Management Science Study Program, School of Graduate Studies, IPB University, Prof. Dwi Astiani, Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Tanjungpura, Dr. Luki Subehi, Research Center for Limnology, Indonesian Institute of Sciences, and Prof. Maman Turjaman, Forest Research and Development Centre (FRDC), the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) made presentations with titles related to this topic.

For Food and Health Sciences, Prof. C. Hanny Wijaya, Department of Food Science and Technology, IPB University and Dr. Yanetri Asi Nion, Department of Agronomy/Graduate School of Biology, University of Palangka Raya made presentations with titles related to this topic.

For New and Renewable Energy Sciences, Prof. Dwi Susilaningsih, Research Center for Biotechnology, Indonesian Institute of Sciences and Prof. Ridwan Yahya, Department of Forestry, Universitas Bengkulu made presentations with titles related to this topic.

After the presentation, Nina Yulianti, Ph.D., Department of Environmental Science, University of Palangka Raya held the discussion sessions. There were a lot of questions obtained from participants who attended via Zoom and YouTube. All presenters answered the questions with clear explanations.
