JAAI Held the 9th International Symposium of the JSPS Alumni Association of Indonesia

On 9–10 February 2026, in collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the Indonesian Researcher Union (PPI), and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Bangkok Office, the JSPS Alumni Association of Indonesia (JAAI) held its 9th International Symposium in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The symposium began with a report from JAAI Chairman Prof. Dr. Puspita Lisdiyanti, and a welcome address from the Chairman of BRIN Prof. Dr. Arif Satria, followed by opening remarks delivered by representatives from the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, the Chairman of PPI, and Dr. Yoshio Otani, Director of the JSPS Bangkok Office.

This year’s theme, “JAAI’s Role Towards a Golden Indonesia 2045,” highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between Indonesia and Japan in research and innovation. Researchers from both countries shared their expertise and engaged in constructive discussions. Two Japanese researchers were invited to deliver keynote lectures:
– Prof. Shinji Kaneko, Vice Rector of Hiroshima University
“Future Practice of Education in University Towards a Golden Indonesia 2045 (Japanese Lessons Learned and Recommendations for Indonesia).”
– Prof. Chiaki Ogino, Head of the Graduate School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Kobe University
“Bioenergy and Biotechnology Industry and Manufacture: Lessons Learned from Japan and Recommendations towards a Golden Indonesia 2045.”

The symposium also included a medal award ceremony for the graduates of JSPS RONPAKU programs. Ms. Kazumi Yabuta, Deputy Director of the JSPS Bangkok Office, introduced “JSPS and Its International Programs.”

On the second day, participants joined a workshop on Carbon Footprint Calculation and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a Tools-Based Decision-Making Approach. The workshop was followed by a focus group discussion, providing an opportunity for researchers and students to present their latest works in line with the symposium theme.

As part of JAAI’s and JSPS’s outreach activities, visits were also conducted prior to the symposium at Udayana University on 4 February and Universitas Gadjah Mada on 6 February. JSPS Guidance Seminars were held at both universities. Director Yoshio Otani delivered opening remarks, and Deputy Director Kazumi Yabuta introduced JSPS programs, followed by active questions from researchers.

Overall, the Symposium served as an important platform to strengthen scientific partnerships, promote international collaboration between Indonesia and Japan, and further expand awareness of JSPS programs and JAAI activities.
