On 27 and 28 October, 2017, General Assembly and the first International Symposium of JSPS Alumni Association Indonesia (JAAI) were held at Cibodas Botanical Garden in West Java, Indonesia.
\nOn the opening ceremony, Dr. Puspita Lisdiyanti, chair of the symposium, explained the details of the symposium, followed by Dr. Siti Noermali yati Purnomo, secretary general, Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI), Dr. Muhammad Dimyati, Directorate General, Strengthening for Research and Development, Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education and Dr. Susan Gallardo, President, JSPS Alumni Association of the Philippines (JAAP), delivered welcome remarks respectively.

The symposium kicked off with opening remarks by Prof. Kuniaki Yamashita, Director, JSPS Bangkok Office.

After the photo session, five lecturers from both Indonesia and Japan delivered keynote speeches under the symposium\u2019s theme \u201cThe Role of JAAI to Promote Food, Water, Energy, Human, and Environmental Security\u201d.
\nDr. Drajat Martiano, Bogor Agriculture University, who spoke on the topic \u201cCurrent Status on Food and Nutrition Security in Indonesia: Challenge and Opportunities\u201d. He explained the current situation of food in Indonesia by using government statistics of international comparison.

Dr. Anto Tri Sugiarto, Director, Instrumentation Development Agency, LIPI, spoke on the topic \u201cSustainable Water Management in Small Island: One Island, One Plan, One Water\u201d.
\nHe introduced about the project collaboration with Indonesian government to solve the water problem for Small Island in Indonesia.

Dr. Anto Tri Sugiarto, Director, Instrumentation Development Agency, LIPI<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n

Mr. Hirohide Nakamura, President, A-Wing Ltd. Co., spoke on the theme of Energy Security. He suggested that it is needed to build the regionally produced and consumed electric power system so as to supply stable electric power to all Indonesians.

Adjunct Assoc. Prof. Kei Mizuno, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University, spoke on the topic \u201cDevelopment and Human Security in Asia: Japanese Experiences and Indonesian Challenges\u201d. He explained about environmental and human security, as an example of industrial pollution issues of Japanese society during 1960’s to 70’s.

Prof. Dedy Darnaedi, Research Center for Biology, LIPI, spoke on the topic \u201cThe Rules of Botanical and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity\u201d He introduced there are 30 Botanical Garden in Indonesia managed by LIPI and how important role they play.

There were around 120 participants including those from private company, members of JAAI and researchers who experienced JSPS program. After each presentation, many participants asked questions to keynote speakers and discussed actively with them.

Next, Plenary sessions were held by researchers related with the theme of symposium.

Winding up the symposium, closing remark was delivered by Dr. Subyakto, M. Sc, president, JAAI. In addition, one poster was selected from out of total 21 posters as a best poster.

Following the symposium, General Assembly was held. Dr. Subyakto reported JAAI activities. Then, JAAI activity plan in next year was discussed by all JAAI members.

Throughout these events, JAAI members and all participants enjoyed opportunity to make friendship each other.
