On May 28 2015, JSPS Bangkok Office held JSPS Guidance Seminar at Chiang Mai University (CMU), Thailand.
CMU, marking its 50th anniversary last year, is highly appreciated in its academic performance. It was since July 2013 that JSPS held annual guidance seminar in CMU with the great support from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Avorn Opatratanakit, Assistant President for Research and Academic Service Affairs.
Firstly, JSPS staffs were welcomed by Assoc. Prof. Sermkiat Jomjunyong, Vice President for Research and Academic Services. He mentioned that CMU has currently been developing multilateral joint research among ASEAN countries. At the same time, CMU would like to further develop collaboration with Japanese universities especially in the field of technology.
Following the meeting with CMU representatives, JSPS guidance seminar was convened with more than 50 participants not only from CMU but also from Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna, Maejo University and Payap University, all of which locating in Chiang Mai.
After Prof. Dr. Avorn’s opening remark, JSPS gave an overview of its organization and provided information on the international programs.
Then two former JSPS RONPAKU fellows of Chiang Mai University, Prof. Dr. Saisamorn Lumyong, Faculty of Science, who obtained doctoral degree from Hokkaido University and Dr. Luksana Makonakawkeyoon, Faculty of Medicine, who obtained doctoral degree from Ryukyu University talked about their own research experience in Japan and subsequent joint research projects with Japanese researchers based on the research networks built through RONPAKU program.
A Japanese professor was also invited to the seminar. Prof. Ito, former professor at Mie University and currently being committed to the internationalisation of Chiang Mai University, talked about how to accept excellent researchers in universities in the context of “Research” and “Internationalisation”.
During Q&A session, several questions were raised about bilateral program and core-to-core program. While JSPS explained qualification and detailed application process, Dr. Saisamorn and Dr. Luksana also gave advice from their own experience.
