(Abstract of the Lecture)
To further enhance the PUV Modernization program of the National Government in an integrated manner, development of public transport-based technologies is important. This study will discuss the ongoing DOST-PCIEERD-funded research project titled, Sustainable Technology-Assisted Route Planning for Region VI (STARPLAN VI). The overarching objective of this research project is to support the development of a sustainable local public transport route plan that integrates the road and maritime transport network of Region VI using developed technologies for the transport sector. The development of technologies such as the bus passenger counter and its communication system to transmit data, the android application for tracking land- and sea-based public transport by commuters, the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) scheduling tool, and the infrastructure assessment tool are important to support the public transport planning system and management of regions making it efficient, safe, reliable, and sustainable for the benefit of society. Furthermore, to sustain the implementation of the 2018 Local Public Transport Route Plan (LPTRP) of the National Government, this research will integrate the local route plans of municipalities, cities and provinces at the regional level. This research will set an example on how to integrate the transportation system in a region for the benefit of travelers, including locals and tourists, and can be replicated in other parts of the country.
