JSPS-NRCT-JAAT Seminar “EEC and Sustainable Development”

On 8 February, 2018, the international seminar “EEC and Sustainable Development” was held in Bangkok, Thailand, co-hosted by JSPS, National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) and JSPS Alumni Association of Thailand (JAAT).
This seminar is convened annually for the purpose of opening JAAT activities to not only the academia but also the general public and enhancing research activities between Japan and Thailand.
In the opening ceremony, Prof. Dr. Sirirurg Songsivilai, Secretary-General, NRCT, Dr. Mariko Kobayashi, Director, International Program Department, JSPS Tokyo and Dr. Danai Tiwawech, President, JAAT, delivered Opening address. They mentioned about academic exchange history between Japan and Thailand and celebration of the 40th anniversary of MOU between JSPS and NRCT this year.

After photo session, Dr. Narongchai Akrasanee, Chairman, Seranee Group of Companies and Chairman, Khon kean University Council, delivered keynote speech in line with the seminar’s theme “EEC and Sustainable Development”. He explained why Thailand need to proceed EEC (Eastern Economic Corridor) and how EEC contribute to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) adopted by UN in 2012.

The panel discussion that followed, Prof. Shigeyuki Abe, Faculty of Policy Studies and Director, Center for Contemporary Asian Studies, Doshisha University and Mr. Shiro Terashima, first secretary, Japanese Embassy in Thailand were discussed on the topic “EEC, Thailand-Japan: Issues, Problems, Prospects and Sustainable Development”.

EEC is one of the attractive choices for investment for Japanese companies, so over 80 participants not only from Thailand but also from Japan enjoyed the seminar as a fruitful opportunity to interact with each other and form networks.
